Sheffielders asked what local television channel should cover
Sheffield Local Television is inviting city residents for their ideas on what a proposed new local TV channel should cover. The Sheffield-based consortium says the proposed channel – which would be available via freeview on digital television as well as via cable and the internet, would “showcase Sheffield’s rich and dynamic local heritage and current environment.”
Sheffield is one of 21 locations included in a first phase of local television licensing by the media regulator Ofcom, after 15 months of campaigning by Sheffield’s local television consortium.
Now the consortium, which must make its formal application by mid-August, wants to ensure a wide cross-section of Sheffield views are reflected in its local television plans. It has published a short online survey and is hosting a consultation event on 25 July.
The proposed television channel would be based in and serve the Sheffield City region. It would showcase Sheffield talent, provide local news, information and entertainment, and act as both a pathway into the media industry and a lever for local enterprise, according to Richard Motley of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter Agency.
Steve Buckley of CM Solutions, part of the consortium, said:
“Sheffield has a superb local history of culture, creativity and innovation. A local television channel would build on this history – and provide a fresh, accessible medium for the city to participate in and a great platform for Sheffield’s talent.”
The survey – which takes 2 minutes to complete – is available at http://survey.sheffieldlocaltv.co.uk and the public consultation event takes place on 25 July – details are available at http://sheffieldlocaltv.eventbrite.com/ and all are welcome to attend.
