Sheffield Live! TV celebrates two years on air

The local TV channel for Sheffield marked its second anniversary with an invitation to get involved. Sheffield Live! TV launched in September 2014, providing a diverse programme schedule, from politics to poetry, and working alongside Sheffield Live! community radio and the SheffieldLive.org website. The channel operates on a not-for-profit basis and is open to volunteers, community reporters, and independent producers. Partially sighted pianist plays charity fundraising concert

Pianist Bill Skipworth performed a fundraising concert at Sheffield Cathedral to raise money for the Sheffield branch of the Royal Society for the Blind. The performance was particularly poignant as Bill himself has suffered significant sight loss in the last six months. Despite the challenges he was keen to go ahead with the event to raise money for a cause close to his heart. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Bill at the rehearsals.

Sheffield Wednesday: Adam Reach settling in at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday newcomer Adam Reach has spoken about settling in at Hillsborough after his multi-million pound transfer earlier this summer. Reach was Carlos Carvahal’s final summer signing and cost an initial £5 million pounds from Middlesborough. He spent the majority of last season on loan to Preston. Women’s Equality Party leader asks what Sheffield women want

Sophie Walker, leader of the Women’s Equality Party visited Sheffield as part of a nationwide tour to mark the 20th anniversary of the ‘What Women Want’ social survey of 1996. Twenty years ago, postcards were sent to women across Britain asking them the same question. Ten thousand women responded and this ground-breaking study changed the course of British politics. The Women’s Equality Party, which has 65,000 members and registered supporters, is asking ‘what do women want’ today and discussing how to achieve a fair future for all. The party was founded by Sandi Toksvig and Catherine Mayer in March 2015. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Sophie Walker.

Freshers week welcome for new Hallam students

Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have arranged a full week of events to welcome new students to the city. Sports fairs, society fairs and volunteering fairs are all designed to give freshers an insight into university life and provide opportunities to make friends and meet like minded people. Firefighters out in force for emergency response training

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services have tested their capability to respond to a major blaze as part of a service-wide exercise. Dozens of emergency services vehicles lined up outside the former Prince Edward Primary School on Queen Mary Road. The operation, involving more than 60 on duty firefighters and 10 standard fire engines, was the biggest training session of the year. Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Martin Blunden.

Mental health charity under threat

Mental Health Action Group Sheffield may cease to provide vital services after a Sheffield City Council funding decision. The local charity has been told that from 2017 it will no longer be guaranteed an annual grant of £10,500. Established 25 years ago, MHAGS, is a user-led mental health charity. The funding has enabled the charity to provide drop-in services and support to those who have suffered or are suffering from mental health issues. Sheffield Children’s Centre appeal to mark 25 years

The Sheffield Children’s Centre is appealing for contributions, ahead of their 25th anniversary, to help revamp their facilities for local children. The pioneering, co-operatively run centre on Shoreham Street looks after children of all ages and backgrounds, and it also hosts community events. Built in the 1990s, the Centre will be celebrating 25 years in 2017, and is aiming to renew its indoors and outdoors environment.
