Hundreds attended a job fair at Sheffield Town Hall as new figures show unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber region has risen by 5,000 and ranks second highest regional rate per head in the UK. According to the Office of National Statistics UK unemployment has increased slightly for the first time in two years. The UK-wide rate of unemployment rose from 4.3% to 4.4% for the three months to the end of December with 1.47 million now classed as out of work. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
An explosive play called Bad Blood Blues, exposing the ethics of HIV drug trials in Africa, is to be performed in Sheffield at the beginning of March at Theatre Delicatessen on Eyre Street. The play by Paul Sirett explores the moral maze of drug trials on the African population by western pharmaceutical companies. It will be only the second time it has been staged in the UK and will mark the directing debut of Sheffield-based actor John Rwoth-Omack. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
The National Crime Agency has said that Operation Stovewood, the investigation into historic child sexual abuse in Rotherham, has now identified 1,510 victims of which 85 per cent are female. The investigation also reported that 110 suspects have been identified. At a briefing event, senior investigating officer Paul Williamson said his team of 144 officers were working on 34 investigations and engaging with over 260 survivors. British employers are described as ‘living in the dark ages’ and having worrying attitudes towards unlawful behaviour when it comes to recruiting women, according to a new report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. In a survey of more then 1000 private sector business managers around a third agreed it is reasonable during recruitment to ask women about their plans for children in the future. Charlotte Mead, of the Sheffield branch of the Women’s Equality Party told Sheffield Live! she is not surprised by the findings. Baillor Jalloh reports.
The death of former Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has saddened many from Sheffield’s Zimbabwean community. The former leader of Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change died of cancer whilst receiving treatment in Pretoria. Sheffield-based Dr Nkululeko Sibanda, a former MDC member who has also been an advisor to Morgan Tsvangirai, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.
Hundreds took part in a march from Devonshire Green to Sheffield Town Hall as part of a national day of action to celebrate diversity and the contribution of migrants to British society. The “1 Day Without Us” campaign grew from an idea posted on social media by Sheffield author and journalist Matt Carr in response to the rise of xenophobia after the Brexit vote. Local volunteers put their wellies on to help clean up and maintain the Ochre Dyke stream in Crystal Peaks as part of an environmental conservation and improvement project. The work is coordinated by the River Stewardship Company, a Sheffield-based social enterprise working to maintain Sheffield’s waterways for people and wildlife.
