Liberal Democrat leader slams police chief sacking

The leader of Sheffield’s Liberal Democrat Group Shaffaq Mohammed has condemned the Police and Crime Commissioner’s decision to remove Chief Constable David Crompton. Councillor Mohammed questioned whether crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings should have acted earlier rather than waiting until two months before Crompton was due to retire. Crime commissioner defends decision to seek resignation of South Yorkshire police chief

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings has defended his demand for the resignation of Chief Constable David Crompton. Crompton was originally suspended after an inquest jury concluded police conduct contributed to or caused the deaths of 96 football fans at Hillsborough in 1989. The former chief constable, in response, has said the PCC’s resignation call was “fundamentally wrong” and he would take legal action. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield celebrates International Day of Older Persons

A public event on the Moor was among activities in Sheffield to celebrate the UN International Day of Older Persons. The international day is held across the world on 1 October but Sheffield got off to an early start with events including stalls and an information centre. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Ruth Hawke, programme co-ordinator for Age Better in Sheffield, and to Liz Bowman and Jane Peach from Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind.

Jeremy Corbyn: Labour can climb electoral mountain

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a focus on the next general election in his closing address to the Labour party conference. Corbyn was re-elected on Saturday for the second time as Labour leader with a majority of 61.8 percent. He said Labour should build support by focusing on the “needs and aspirations of middle and lower income voters”.

Caborn calls for independent inquiry into football corruption

Former sport Minister Richard Caborn has called on the Football Association to commission an independent inquiry into football corruption. The call comes after former England boss, Sam Allardyce stepped down as manager of the national side, following allegations in the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Allardyce was reported to have offered advice to undercover reporters posing as businessmen from the far east on how to “get around” player transfer rules.  Allardyce left his position in disgrace after just 67 days, making him the shortest reigning England manager in history. Fabric found in Ben Needham search

Detectives searching for missing toddler Ben Needham on the Greek island of Kos have found pieces of fabric on land close to where the toddler was last seen. Ben, from Sheffield, was 21-months old when he went missing during a family holiday in July 1991. A fresh excavation of farmland began on Monday, following new evidence.

First students arrive at new University Technical College

Sheffield’s new University Technical College (UTC) has opened on the Olympic Legacy Park and students have begun moving into after a two week induction. The £10m development is the second UTC in Sheffield. It will provide specialist study for 14 to 19-year-old students in technical skills for healthcare, sports sciences and computing, as well as offering traditional academic qualifications.
