Sheffield Carnival returns for August bank holiday

Sheffield Carnival is set to return for the first time since the 1980s with a colourful parade which will take place at the Norfolk Heritage Park. The carnival, with costumes, music, food and cultural activities will run alongside Sheffield Fayre as a free, family friendly event. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed joined the preparations at Weston Park Museum.

Doncaster bin strike called off

A five day bin strike in Doncaster has been called off by members of the Unite union after a new offer on pay and jobs was agreed with private contractor Suez. Union members had threatened to stage a series of walkouts but now say the pay dispute has been resolved after a revised offer was accepted unanimously. Community partners launch Parson’s Cross Summerfest

A week long festival of activities for young people has been launched in Parson’s Cross with the support of Sheffield Council and local community partners. Summerfest offers music, games, sports, a pop cinema, tech workshops and craft activities and is taking place at Chaucer School and The Learning Zone. Organisations involved include SOAR, the University of Sheffield, SWFC Community Outreach, YMCA White Rose, Parson Cross Initiative and Chaucer School. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Trauma recovery centre wins £250k Northern Powerhouse funding

Steps Rehabilitation, which helps people to recover from brain or spinal injuries and complex trauma, has secured a £250,000 loan from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund. The cash will help the company grow its services as a national centre of excellence for people recovering from serious illness and accidents. The centre built at the former Jacobs engineering works, off Abbeydale Road, opened in May this year. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Sharks captain takes on double role

The Sheffield Sharks have announced they will extend captain Mike Tuck’s contract for the 2017/18 season but with an extra twist. The 6’7″ power forward has held the role of captain for the last five years and has recently been given a marketing role with the Sharks alongside his playing career.  Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield students celebrate A-level success

Thousands of students across South Yorkshire have received their A-level results with Sheffield students celebrating another year of success. At Silverdale school 72 per cent of pupils got A* to B grades, an increase of 8 per cent compared to last year. A quarter of students achieved A or A* grades, and the results will help to send students to top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge and many Russell Group institutions. Sierra Leoneans in Sheffield fear for families after mudslide

Sierra Leoneans in Sheffield have expressed concern for their families and loved-ones after mudslides killed more than 600 people with many more missing in the capital, Freetown. The country’s president, Earnest Bai Koroma, has declared a week of mourning after Monday’s heavy rain left hundreds of people homeless and fears mount over the outbreak of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. There are also concerns of further mudslides in the capital as heavy rain has been forecast for the next couple of days. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Rotherham youth worker in running for national award

Nicola Harding, who works at Rotherham’s Myplace performance youth and arts centre, has been shortlisted for the title Young Worker of The Year in the Youth Matters Awards 2017. Harding joins a shortlist with four other young workers from across the country, each of whom have shown outstanding commitment to supporting young people. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Public underestimate scale of youth homelessness

A new report by the End Youth Homelessness Campaign suggests public opinion greatly underestimates the scale of youth homelessness in the UK. The findings show that most people believe there are less than 50,000 homeless young people in the UK whereas studies indicate more than 83,000. The study also revealed commonly held misconceptions, with nearly half of people citing drug or alcohol addiction as among the most common reasons for homelessness.
