World War One hero, Sgt Arnold Loosemore, awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery has been honoured by a plaque unveiled at Barker’s Pool. Sgt Loosemore of the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s Regiment won the medal for action one hundred years ago, on 11 August 1917, when he single-handedly engaged with the enemy on the frontline of the war in Belgium. He was one of seven Loosemore brothers from the city to serve in the war. The plaque at the Sheffield Cenotaph is part of a national scheme to remember all World War One recipients of the medal. On the 20th anniversary of the murder of Patricia Grainger, her son Daniel has launched a new police appeal for information in a bid to bring the killer to justice. Daniel Grainger was just five years old when his 25 year old mother was strangled, stabbed and sexually assaulted near her home in Parsons Cross on 10 August 1997. Her body was dumped in a brook in nearby woodland and her killer never found. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

The return of Special Olympics GB to Sheffield is a great opportunity to raise the profile of the games, according to president Lawrie McMenemy and chair Murton Mann. McMenemy and Mann spoke to Sheffield Live! before the opening ceremony. The GB National Games are held once every four years and last took place in Sheffield in 1993. The Special Olympics 2017 torch has arrived in Sheffield to accompany thousands of athletes and their supporters. The GB National Games are for athletes with learning disabilities and cover a wide range of sports including tennis, swimming and bowling. Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium will host 20,000 people for the opening ceremony, with ex-Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley headlining the event. Ray Matthews, the pensioner who ran 75 fundraising marathons in 75 days, was joined by Rotherham Mayor Eve Rose Keenan to dig the first turf for a new woodland adventure path at Newman School. The school supports young people with physical disabilities, medical needs and complex learning needs. Matthews raised £75,000 for the adventure path and for new playground equipment to provide a safe and stimulating environment to play, grow and learn. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
A touring exhibition of dolls’ houses from the V&A Museum of Childhood is on display at Weston Park Museum. Visitors can journey through the history of the home with 12 intricately crafted dolls’ houses spanning over 300 years. Marriages, parties, politics and crime play out in country mansions, suburban villas, newly-built council estates and high-rise apartments, as each house is brought to life by the characters that live and work there. Thousands of athletes from around the country have arrived in Sheffield for the start of this year’s Special Olympics GB National Games. The country’s largest multi-sports event for athletes with learning disabilities takes place over four days in venues across the city including English Institute of Sports, Ponds Forge and the Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium, The opening ceremony at Bramall Lane includes celebrity guests and local talent including Under the Stars, Team Power Stilts, Aim To Dance, Kansaze African Dancers, Chinese Lions Dance, Team Katalyst Dance & Gymnasts and the ParaCheer Cheerleaders.
