Disused cemetery wins Heritage Lottery support

The Friends of Zion Graveyard heritage group are aiming to save the old burial site in Attercliffe where victorian philanthropist and anti-slavery campaigner Mary Anne Rowson is among those interred. The disused ground was put on sale with the prospect that the memorial stones of at least 58 graves could be moved and the land used as a car park instead. Charity founder tells of struggle for justice and prison reform

Michelle Nicholson, who was behind bars for more than a decade for a murder she says she could not prevent, now spends her life supporting the rehabilitation of women who have experienced the criminal justice system. Nicholson claims she was framed for the murder of her father and has published her story in ‘Without a Voice: One Woman’s Fight for Justice’. After leaving prison she set up the Sheffield-based charity Key Changes – Unlocking Women’s Potential. Nick Coleman reports for Sheffield Live!

Council in recruitment drive for care workers

Sheffield City Council has been holding a recruitment fair at the Millennium Gallery to provide advice and information about opportunities in the care industry and to recruit new care workers. The event was attended by the council’s apprenticeship, social work, intervention and prevention, residential children’s, and fostering and adoption teams. No bailout for Carillion, says government

Following the collapse of the construction firm Carillion, the government have ruled out any use of public funds to bailout the company. Carillion’s directors are also under investigation over their conduct ahead of the company’s collapse. James Otter reports for Sheffield Live!

WW1 memorial plaques renewed for Sheffield City Battalion

Two WW1 memorial plaques, made of stainless steel, are on their way to France to renew the Sheffield Pals Battalion Monument, part of the Sheffield Memorial Park in Serre. The plaques were presented to Sheffield Council by the Yorkshire Regiment at a Sheffield Town Hall event which also marked the launch of the Sheffield Pals Pride Cycle Ride. Participating in the fundraising cycle ride, a 400 mile journey from the city to the Sheffield Memorial Park in France, will be the Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr Magid Magid, the Lord Mayor’s Consort, Gavin Holliday, and staff from Sheffield Council and Meadowhall. The goal is to raise £20,000 to enhance the visitor experience in the Memorial Park. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

5k fun run planned at Rother Valley

An obstacle course fun run, featuring giant mazes, walls, gauntlets and slides, is set to come to the Rother Valley Country Park in September. The Gung-Ho 5k is open to both children and adults with participants encouraged to raise sponsorship funding for local and national charities. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Steel City derby ends in goalless draw

Jos Luhukay’s first match in charge of the Owls ended on a positive start with a goalless draw at Bramall Lane on Friday night. Sheffield Wednesday took a point from the match despite going down to ten men in the second half. Owls captain Glenn Loovens was sent off for a second bookable offence but the Blades, who won 4-2 at Hillsborough in September, could not make the breakthrough. After the game, both managers spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.

New park and ride opens in Tinsley

A new park and ride facility has been unveiled in Tinsley at IKEA Sheffield. The development was one of the conditions of planning approval for the furniture store and brings a total of eight park and ride facilities now available across the city.
