Sheffield hosts end of season goalball tournament

The English Institute of Sport played host to an end of season tournament and awards event for goalball, the only paralympic team sport designed for the visually impaired. Played with raised markings on the floor, blindfolds are used to ensure an even playing field as players locate the ball through sound. Goalball is played by men and women and Goalball UK has supported a highly successful national women’s team. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

 

Darnall schools hold community sports day

Primary and secondary schools in Darnall came together for an annual sports day at the City Athletics Stadium on Woodburn Road. The community event, open to parents and children, aimed to promote children’s engagement in sport and exercise. £250m fund for grassroots tennis launched in Sheffield

A national investment programme to improve grassroots tennis facilities has been launched in Sheffield, one of the first cities to benefit. The programme, backed by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) will assist to revamp courts, improve training facilities and make the sport more accessible. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Tennis courts revived in Sheffield parks

Previously unplayable council-owned tennis courts in parks across Sheffield have gained a new lease of life thanks to investment from Parks Tennis and the Lawn Tennis Association. The refurbishment of 34 courts across 10 sites aims to bring low cost tennis to people of all ages and abilities. An online booking system will allow quick reservation with funds raised being used to maintain the courts. British international students compete in COBIS Games

Hundreds of British international students have been competing in Sheffield this weekend as part of the Council of British International Students (COBIS) Games. The COBIS Games bring together british students studying at international schools across the globe for a weekend of sporting competition including swimming at Ponds Forge and athletics at the Woodbourne Road athletics stadium. Second phase of Sheffield run routes open to the public

Sheffield Council have signposted seven new locations for running in the city’s parks and green spaces as part of the second phase of their Run Routes initiative. Launched last year as part of the Outdoor City project, the run routes are funded by England Athletics and encourage more people to take exercise outdoors. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Wrestling stars coach young basketballers

Youngsters at a basketball event to promote the forthcoming Special Olympics were joined by WWE stars Charlotte Flair and tag team duo American Alpha. With less than 100 days before the Special Olympics comes to Sheffield, the wrestling stars turned their hand to basketball for a special event at the All Saints Sports Centre before their headline bought at the Sheffield Arena. Carvalhal refuses questions over contract

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal threatened to walkout of a press conference after facing contract related questions. The tense meeting with the press came after a comment the Owls boss made on Alan Biggs’ Talking Sheffield show on Sheffield Live! this week. Carvalhal seemed to suggest that his contract was up at the end of this season wheres he had previously intimated he had a further two years left to run. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
