University seeks volunteers for quit smoking research

Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Science are looking to recruit 250 research volunteers to take part in a study on the use of e-cigarettes to stop smoking. Funded by Heart Research UK, the volunteers will be split into three groups and monitored over a six month period to compare use of nicotine rich e-cigarettes, nicotine free e-cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy. Tinsley art project re-imagines industrial past

Following the unveiling of plans for the region’s largest ever public art project, Sheffield Live! spoke to artist Alex Chinneck about the ideas and inspirations behind the planned sculpture trail. The £450,000 Onwards and Upwards project funded by E.ON, will use 100,000 bricks and features five chimneys. Two form an arch across the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, one appears to float in mid-air, another is tied in a knot and a fifth appears cracked and illuminated from within. Waterside festival launches at Victoria Quays

The Waterside Festival has launched at Victoria Quays with a day of water based activities at the Sheffield canal basin. The festival, organised by the Canal and Rivers Trust, includes kayak sessions and introductory guides to fishing. For the second day it will move on to Kelham Island and the River Don. Thanks for everything on Good News Friday

Sheffield researchers claim expressing gratitude can bring benefits for health, empathy, self-esteem, reduced aggression and better sleep.  Dr Chris Blackmore and Dr Fusida Siros from the University of Sheffield are behind the idea of Good News Friday, encouraging the public to declare their thanks for something, whether big, small, personal or universal. Nine million drivers still use mobile phones at the wheel

A new report by the RAC suggests nine million drivers are using their mobile phones illegally whilst driving a vehicle. The report released reveals the number has fallen by a quarter compare to last year, but many are still texting or answering their phones despite tougher penalties being introduced during the year. Council plans Attercliffe area development

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, has spoken to Sheffield Live! about ambitions to develop the Attercliffe neighbourhood. While city centre developments are proceeding at a pace, the Attercliffe area, which includes the listed Adelphi building, has seen little recent investment. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Olympic Legacy Park official opening

The Olympic Legacy Park in the Don Valley has been officially opened by the former Sheffield MP and ex-Sports Minister, Richard Caborn. The 35 acre complex is set to be part of an innovation distrct for health and wellbeing research and learning including the new UTC college, Oasis Academy School and an indoor arena that will be home to Sheffield Sharks basketball team. The outdoor spaces will feature two running routes, a 100m track and 3G sports pitches. The park will also include a hotel and business offices. Nether Edge Festival kicks off with carnival

The week long Nether Edge Festival has launched with an official opening and carnival at St Peter’s Hall Common Ground on Machon Bank Road. The family friendly event features music, concerts, art, literature and sports activities and culminates with the Party in the Park on 24 September. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Anti-fracking campaigners march in Eckington

Hundreds of campaigners and local residents joined a No Frack Day rally at the proposed INEOS fracking site near Eckington. The rally began at Coal Aston Village Hall with a march to the proposed site in Bramleymoor Lane, off Marsh Lane. Campaigners highlight the dangers of fracking and are urging the government to promote safer and sustainable energy sources. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Doncaster Knights sign Sheffield lad

Doncaster Knights have signed rising rugby union professional and Sheffield lad Curtis Wilson, who was until recently with Sheffield Eagles under a short term deal. The 25 year old winger has signed a season long contract with the Knights who currently sit in the top half of the championship table. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke exclusively to Curtis Wilson about the move.
