Sheffield city centre to get free public Wi-Fi

A public Wi-Fi service is to be rolled out from next spring across Sheffield city centre providing free internet access for residents and visitors. The service is to be installed and operated by locally-based internet service provider Idaq Networks which will generate revenues from user data, advertising and corporate services. The announcement by Sheffield Council follows a tender process to select a suitable provider. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

British ice championship underway

The week-long British Figure Skating Championship 2017 is being held at Ice Sheffield and will see top performers compete for UK titles and to stake their claim for a place at the Winter Olympics 2018 in PyeongChang. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to technical controller Ann Findley.

DEWA Project highlights protection gap for women asylum seekers

Refugee support group the DEWA Project are partnering with mental health practitioners and solicitors to assist women asylum seekers who have suffered sexual or domestic violence. The Home Office Gender Asylum Plan has recognised that woman asylum seekers should be provided with access to trauma counselling and asylum rights information and should not have to relate their story in front of their children or to a male interviewers or interpreter. New innings for community cricket nets

Sharrow youngsters hoping to follow in the footsteps of Joe Root are to benefit from £28,000 investment in cricket nets and facilities at Mount Pleasant Park. Radio show launches record label

A popular weekly radio show on Sheffield Live community radio has led to the setting up of a record label and the launch of a first CD for music and comedy duo, the Glummer Twins. The Steel and Wire Show, produced by Harry Welburn, focuses on bluegrass, americana and old time folk music. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Council seeks views on landlord licensing scheme

Sheffield Council are set to launch a thirteen week consultation on a new landlord licensing scheme to improve the safety and standard of privately rented homes and how they are managed. The proposals are to include a selective licensing scheme for sections of London Road, Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road, after inspections found three in four rented properties in the area had safety issues that were exposing people to serious risk. The council will be asking local landlords, residents, tenants and businesses to comment on the proposals which would affect around 1,000 homes in a four mile stretch. The consultation opens on 27 November and runs for an eight week period. Baillot Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
