Much loved monster, The Gruffalo, appeared as part of National Bookstart Week to promote early years reading. The event, aimed at under 5s and their parents, was moved to the indoor location due to weather conditions. National Bookstart Week runs from 5 to 11 June. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield’s open air amphitheatre in South Street Park was the location for the weekend festival of live music, food stalls and family activities. Sheffield lapdancing club Spearmint Rhino has had it’s license renewed for a further twelve months despite over 100 formal objections being made to Sheffield Council. The licensing committee of Sheffield Council imposed new restrictions however including a requirement that club signage be concealed during daylight hours. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
To celebrate World Book Day 2017, children from Concord Junior School came face-to-face with Oona the Elephant at Meadowhall shopping centre. Oona is the main character in Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild which runs at the Lyceum Theatre later this month. It is the story of a boy who is saved from a tsunami by the elephant and who then has to survive in the jungle. The life sized elephant puppet is operated by four actors who took her on a stroll through the shopping centre before meeting the school children. The encounter is part of an ongoing partnership between Meadowhall and Sheffield Theatres to bring theatre and cultural education to children in the S9 neighbourhood. Site Gallery has announced an ambitious expansion project with over £2.7m investment to create a new gallery and events space on Paternoster Row. Sheffield’s leading contemporary art space specialises in new media, moving image and performance and will treble the scale of its public offer including a new 262 square metre gallery and a flexible event space for education, creative activity and commercial hires. The plans also provide for a 40-seat café, a shop and business units. Work is planned to commence in April 2017, with the existing gallery to be temporarily closed while work takes place. A programme of pop-up events is planned in the interim. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
The fifth annual Sheffield Zine Fest took place at the Hallam Hubs, celebrating everything to do with zines, self-made magazines and booklets often given away or sold for the cost of printing. The event included workshops, stalls and exhibitions with a focus not only content, but also designs, styles and print methods. Many zinesters hand print covers, sew bindings, or colour in pages individually. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
More than 300 artists working across a range of media have offered their under-the-bed artworks for sale to the public as part of an annual exhibition at Cupola Gallery. The gallery, established in 1991, is one of the most respected spaces for the exhibition and sale of contemporary fine art and craft in the North of England. Sheffield’s annual Children’s Book Awards were announced today, with the overall winner, Michael Rosen, and other authors present at The Crucible for the ceremony and signings. The Sheffield Children’s Book Awards bring together schools across Sheffield to enable children to vote on their favourite books. As part of Sheffield’s Off the Shelf Festival of Words, Girl Gang collective and promoter Sheffield Girl collaborated for a music-themed weekend. The event included discussion about women’s contribution to the Sheffield music scene and a participative display to generate a timeline of the history of women in Sheffield music. Moor Sheffield and Off the Shelf collaborated in an outdoor event to celebrate 100 years of the popular children’s author Roald Dahl. A fizz-whizzing afternoon was had by human beans of all ages and visitors were encourage to make dirty beast masks, BFG ears or Cinderella crowns. There was even a robot poem generator.
