Citizens Advice Sheffield to develop services using British Sign Language

Citizens Advice Sheffield has been awarded a £25,000 grant from the Martin Lewis Fund to develop advice services for people who use British Sign Language (BSL). The project will offer digital advice via Skype to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and whose first language is BSL. The funding will enable tailored support to BSL users in new ways that could be rolled out to Citizens Advice services in other areas. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council resigns

Councillor Leigh Brammal, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council has resigned from his role with immediate affect and is to stand down as Labour councillor for Southey. Councillor Bramall, 42, has represented Southey ward since 2004 and was appointed deputy leader of the council in 2015. Bramall said the decision to leave was a wrench, but “it is the right decision for me and my family”. He is understood to be taking up a position with a communications company in Sheffield. History of protest on display at the Millennium Gallery

An exhibition that charts the history of protests and activism in Sheffield, from 1794 to the present day, is on display at The Millennium Gallery. The exhibition, titled Protest Lab, invites visitors to contribute by adding their own stories to the collection. The project is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Collection Fund and will be on display until the end of May. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Access Card scheme to assist people with disability

Local charity, Disability Sheffield, has teamed up with Sheffield City Council and Nimbus to offer a new Access Card for disabled people and their carers. The card will help people with disability gain assistance with shopping and other activities. According to Government research, shopping, as well as other public activities such as going to the cinema, theatre or gigs, are among the most difficult experiences for disabled people. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Andrew Crooks, a wheelchair user from Disability Sheffield.

Campaigners protest over planned Smithy Wood service station

More than 150 people demonstrated outside Sheffield Town Hall over plans to build a motorway service station in ancient woodland at junction 35 of the M1. The £45 million development would include a fast food court, 80 bed hotel and a car park in Smithy Wood, near Thorpe Hesley. The protest was organised by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust who are campaigning to block the proposal by developer MSA Extra and landowner St Paul’s. The planned development has been subject of a long-running dispute. A final decision was expected to be reached by Sheffield councillors on March 8 but has been post poned until further notice. Public urged to contribute to reducing air pollution

Members of the public have been hearing about and taking part in research at the Botanical Garden on the role of plants in absorbing air pollution in the city. The presentation by Dr Maria Val Martin, lecturer at the University of Sheffield took place at the new Dorothy Fox Education Centre. Participants were encouraged to make a difference by sharing cars, cycling to work or using public transport. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

New educational centre opens at the Botanical Gardens

The new Dorothy Fox Education Centre has been officially opened at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens by Peregrine Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire. The Duke is a patron of the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust. The new centre aims to transform the use of the gardens as an educational resource for people of all ages. Volunteer fair offers opportunities to make a difference

Over thirty charities took part with stands, exhibitions and advice stalls in the Sheffield Volunteer Fair 2017 held at The Circle, Division Street. The event highlighted some of the the volunteering vacancies available and how to get involved in making a difference in the community.
