Dozens protest over planned job centre closure

Job centre workers held a one-day strike in a dispute over plans to close Sheffield Eastern Avenue Jobcentre on the Manor Top estate. The Public and Commercial Services Union says the job centre is located in one of the most deprived areas of the city and provides a vital service to the local community. A further five-day strike is expected to begin on Monday. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Dozens march to highlight education cuts

Campaigners gathered at the Old Heeley Bank school to support the People’s March for Education, a three day walk from Sheffield To Nothingham promoted by the National Union of Teachers. The NUT said the aim of the march is to highlight a “crisis” facing schools and the education system. According to the Union the Government has cut school funding by £2.2 billion since 2015 and plans to cut another £3 billion by 2020. The NUT claims ninety-nine per cent of schools will suffer funding cuts. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Broomhall open day promotes community safety

The Broomhall Together day for local residents included activities, advice and dialogue with police, emergency services, Sheffield Council and community groups. The event brought together residents and public agencies to talk about issues and problems in the community, services available and how to tackle crime and improve safety in the neighbourhood. Hundreds attend Sheffield Food Festival

Surveys reveals lack of confidence in policing

A survey commissioned by the Crime Commissioner has revealed a lack of confidence in South Yorkshire Police and the policing of local communities. Out of 736 people who completed the survey, 357 reported a lack of confidence in the force as a whole and 350 said they lacked confidence in local policing. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings.

Poetry renaissance in South Yorkshire

The 2017 South Yorkshire Poetry Festival has been taking place at venues across the region with a series of contemporary poetry events including readings, performance and walks. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to festival director Brian Lewis.

Lord Winston opens Legacy Park college

Professor Lord Robert Winston opened the UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park college at an official ceremony to launch the new facility for 14-19 year old students. The £10 million college on the former Don Valley site will specialise in computing, health sciences and sport science and is fitted with state of the art equipment.
