Car insurance hikes hit Sheffield drivers

Drivers in Sheffield are facing a 15 per cent increase in car insurance compared to last year, with an average vehicle insurance cost of £952, according to a new report. The figures have been published by price comparision website, Confused.com, and are similar to trends across the country. Sheffield Live reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Amanda Stretton, motoring editor for Confused.com.

Council seeks new tree campaign prosecutions

Sheffield Council are seeking fresh prosecutions of tree campaigners for allegedly breaching a recent injunction relating to tree felling. Simon Crump from Myrtle Road and others were handed the legal notices today after crossing safety barriers on Meersbrook Park Road set up by council contractors undertaking tree felling works. The court injunction was issued in August to eighteen people including Councillor Alison Teal after they previously crossed safety barriers in a bid to stop the felling of trees. Off the Shelf brings magic to The Moor

The Off the Shelf Festival of Words 2017 is underway and this weekend featured a host of activities for children celebrating magical creatures and classic stories. Now into its 25th year, Off the Shelf 2017 runs over three weeks and alongside a wide range of literary interests it carries three main strands, focussing on radicalism, India and crime. Sheffield’s two universities are jointly running the festival this year and have promised that Off the Shelf will remain true to its roots whilst adding new content from academia. Former Owls star and England international in charity book signing

Former Sheffield Wednesday and England international footballer, Carlton Palmer, has launched his autobiography with a book signing in aid of the Cavendish Cancer Care charity. Palmer has committed 20 per cent of the cover price of signed copies to be donated to the charity. The retired midfielder said he has lost many friends to cancer and called it “the devils disease”.  Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Carlton Palmer at Owlerton Stadium.

Burton Street celebrates community business success

Burton Street Foundation is one of hundreds of community businesses opening their doors to the public to celebrate Community Business Weekend. The Hillsborough-based organisation works with people of all ages and abilities and provides facilities for learning, play and social activities. Over 50 other community groups and social enterprises are part of the Burton Street community including Under the Stars, Alzeimer’s Society and A Mind Apart. Nick Coleman reports for Sheffield Live!

Diabetes report highlights foot ulcer risk

More than a third of people are unaware of the dangers of diabetes related foot ulcers which untreated can lead to foot amputations, a new survey from Diabetes UK has revealed. Diabetic foot ulcer is a major complication of diabetes with 80 per cent of diabetes related amputations arising from unhealed ulcers. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Stephen Ryan, head of the North of England region for Diabetes UK.

Open house at Amy’s House

Special needs charity, Amy’s House, is offering coffee mornings and specialist advice to support children with disabilities and their families. It was a full house at Amy’s House this week with advice on offer from hearing loss specialists Bloom Audiologists. Amy’s House was set up after founder Jayne Hurdicth, lost her daughter Amy to meningitis and her youngest daughter, Molly, was born with special needs. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Green councillors shortlisted for national awards

Sheffield Green Party councillors Alison Teal and Magid Magid have been shortlisted for national honours in the LGiU/CCLA Councillor Achievement Awards 2017. Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor Alison Teal was shortlisted for the Community Champion award, while Broomhill and Sharrow Vale councillor Magid Magid has been shortlisted for the Young Councillor of the Year award. Sheffield Live! Community Business Weekend Open Day

Sheffield Live! is holding an Open Day event, 12-5pm, Friday 6th October to celebrate Community Business Weekend.

The second annual Community Business Weekend organised by Power to Change will be taking place from 5th-8th October 2017. The event celebrates the 7000 community businesses across England in local hands.
