‘Cornucopia Radio’ is a local ‘audio drama’ group which works closely with Sheffield Live! to give opportunities to local writers and performers to have their own work produced, performed and broadcast via the FM frequency (and networked around the world via various podcasting systems). It is both a platform for established Sheffield writers & performers and anybody wishing to gain experience or exposure for their work. ‘Fishing’ by local playwright Paul Kenny, tells the story of a son’s last ditch attempts at connection and reconciliation with his dying father Frank; who as the cancer takes over his body, is becoming increasingly bitter and frustrated at the prospect of losing control over what little time he has left. In the hospice, he dreams of one last adventure of his own, a return to one of his favourite fishing spots to hit a Tench or two and sink a pint of Kingston’s. Realising that time is of the essence, Phil kidnaps his father and on a hired narrow-boat and borrowed time, the two men embark on a journey of discovery revolving around the only activity they ever shared…fishing.

Conceived in 1998 by the Labour government, New Deal for Communities (NDC) was a scheme aiming to bring about community-led regeneration in the most deprived neighbourhoods of the UK. The Burngreave neighbourhood in Sheffield was identified as one of those areas and has been awarded £52 million, to be spent over a ten year period from 2001 to 2011. Burngreave NDC received extensive coverage in the local press when it announced that its coffers were close to running dry two years earlier than planned. A very controversial subject, the funding crisis overshadowed the work that had (or hadn’t) been done so far.
This seven part series, produced from May to September 2009 by *Eirini Apostolidou, aims to portray the change in Burngreave from the 90s onwards, and to trace the effect of NDC on the local community. *Eirini Apostolidou graduated from Panteion University in Athens, Greece, with a B.A. in Political Science & History in 2005. After graduating she worked at newspapers as a journalist and sub-editor. Since November 2008 she volunteers for SheffieldLive! 93.2FM as both a producer and a presenter.
Hannah James and Sam Sweeney are a traditional folk music duo and have been playing together for almost 8 years. They met in 2002 and have been playing together in English folk group Kerfuffle since then. More recently 
known for their work with Bellowhead and the Demon Barber Roadshow, they are now embarking on a new project as a duo. The debut album Catches & Glees is out now and available from www.hannahandsam.co.uk
We were lucky enough to have them drop into our studios last week as they talked to Dave Eyre about their new album, their musical journey and played an amazing collection of songs for us live in the studio.

Have you got an idea that you would like to turn into a radio programme for broadcast on community radio? Is there something you would like to hear on the Sheffield airwaves? This could be your chance to make it happen! Sheffield Live! has launched its latest open call for programme proposals.
Sheffield Live! provides public access to production and broadcast facilities supported by experienced media trainers, mentors and producers. We are particularly interested in new ideas for speech based programmes including current affairs, specialist themes like environment and health, new writing, arts and culture. We welcome proposals to serve particular communities of interest in our coverage area, including programmes in community languages. We encourage innovative ideas including experimental uses of sound and radio.
Sheffield Live! prides itself on being first for Sheffield music with programmes by some of Sheffield’s leading local DJs and a high profile for local music and musicians. If you have an idea for a specialist music programme, let us know. We will be reviewing and renewing our music mix and there will be opportunities across the schedule for new talent to join our music programming roster.
There are many others ways you can get involved, for example by joining our morning or midday production teams as a researcher, reporter, presenter, producer or technical operator. Training will be provided for all new programme volunteers with an opportunity to learn media production skills and gain practical experience in a working broadcast environment. Sheffield Live! 93.2FM will be joined by London’s art radio station, Resonance 104.4FM on Tuesday, 21st July for a special community radio broadcast from the fourth plinth on Trafalgar Square.
Presented by Sheffield Live’s Alan Fransman between 8 and 9pm, the broadcast will create a memorable connection between audiences in London and Sheffield. Fransman and the broadcast will become part of “One & Other”, sculptor Antony Gormley’s project to create an astonishing living monument. The Sheffield Live! broadcast will be heard not only by people on Trafalgar Square, but across Sheffield on 93.2FM, across London on Resonance 104.4FM and on the Internet. The broadcast will be featured in Resonance FM’s “Clear Spot”, a slot for unique broadcasts by artists.

two fantastic radio stations.”

On 21st July at 8pm, Alan Fransman will broadcast a live radio show from the Fourth Plinth on Trafalgar Square for his local Community Radio station, Sheffield Live! 93.2FM. “Gormley’s project is people’s art and community radio is people’s media,” said Fransman. “My time on the plinth will be a demonstration of the creativity, initiative and resourcefulness that exists in the community media sector. It will also be a celebration of Sheffield and the exciting cultural product we create at Sheffield Live!”
The broadcast will bring news from Sheffield and break new music from Sheffield’s vibrant music scene. Fransman will also play exclusive tracks, not heard before on any other radio station. Listeners in Trafalgar Square, Sheffield and around the world will have an opportunity to interact with Alan and each other with text messages and he will share them with the audience.
