Do you think you know about Organ Donation?

Think again.

All the major religions in the UK support the principles of organ donation and transplantation. These include Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.

25% of people waiting for organ transplants are from the African Caribbean and Asian communities

Yet less than 2% of the people on the organ donor register are from these communities.

Organ transplants are more successful if the donor and recipient have the same ethnic origin.

As a result black and Asian people may wait three times as long as a white person for a kidney transplant.

What can you do?

You can change these facts.

By registering now with the Organ Donor Register go to the link on our website (station web address)

Tell your family and next of kin your wishes. They’re the ones that will make sure your act of kindness happens.

SLTV wins licence

Sheffield Local Television (SLTV) has been awarded the licence to operate Sheffield’s first digital local television channel.

The decision, taken by communications regulator Ofcom, follows 20 months of campaigning by the Sheffield-based consortium which includes Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM.

Steve Buckley, Chair of SLTV, said: “We are delighted to hear that SLTV has won the local TV licence for Sheffield. We extend a huge thanks to all our supporters who have backed the SLTV bid and contribute to its development. SLTV will be an open, diverse and inclusive channel, locally owned and not run for profit.”

Richard Motley, Managing Director of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter Agency, said: “The local TV channel for Sheffield is a great opportunity for the city to showcase local talent and creativity and to build the digital and creative economy.”

SLTV represents a consortium of Sheffield-based organisations launched in 2011 and led by Community Media Solutions Ltd (CMS), a Sheffield-based media development agency, and Cultural Industries Quarter Agency (CIQA), an urban regeneration and economic development agency with a focus on Sheffield’s creative and digital industries.

Participants include Sheffield Live, Kinematic Media, South Yorkshire Film-makers Network, Sheffield Independent Film Training (SHIFT), Visualis, Sero Consulting, Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre, Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival, Tramlines Festival, Studio of the North, Sheffield University, Sheffield Hallam University and The Sheffield College.

The consortium has been supported by Sheffield City Council, Creative Sheffield and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

SLTV hopes to commence broadcasting by the end of 2013 and will offer local news and information, cultural programming, a platform for independent and community producers and opportunities for local business and public sector organisations.

Have your say on local TV

Sheffielders asked what local television channel should cover
Sheffield Local Television is inviting city residents for their ideas on what a proposed new local TV channel should cover. The Sheffield-based consortium says the proposed channel – which would be available via freeview on digital television as well as via cable and the internet, would “showcase Sheffield’s rich and dynamic local heritage and current environment.”
Sheffield is one of 21 locations included in a first phase of local television licensing by the media regulator Ofcom, after 15 months of campaigning by Sheffield’s local television consortium.
Now the consortium, which must make its formal application by mid-August, wants to ensure a wide cross-section of Sheffield views are reflected in its local television plans. It has published a short online survey and is hosting a consultation event on 25 July.
The proposed television channel would be based in and serve the Sheffield City region. It would showcase Sheffield talent, provide local news, information and entertainment, and act as both a pathway into the media industry and a lever for local enterprise, according to Richard Motley of Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter Agency.
Steve Buckley of CM Solutions, part of the consortium, said:
“Sheffield has a superb local history of culture, creativity and innovation. A local television channel would build on this history – and provide a fresh, accessible medium for the city to participate in and a great platform for Sheffield’s talent.”
The survey – which takes 2 minutes to complete – is available at http://survey.sheffieldlocaltv.co.uk and the public consultation event takes place on 25 July – details are available at http://sheffieldlocaltv.eventbrite.com/ and all are welcome to attend. The consortium have published a facebook page with further information: http://www.facebook.com/SheffieldLocalTV
