Jillian Creasy the Leader of the Green Party in Sheffield is to challenge Paul Blomfield for his Central seat in the General Elections in 2015. Jillian has been a Green Councillor for 10 years for the central ward and hopes to become the first Green MP for Sheffield.
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome Yorkshire was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Hallam University. He also announced that from 2016 the Yorkshire Festival would become a bi-annual event.
The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust is half way to its seven million pound target to buy the property from its current owners and open its doors to the public. The National Trust is supporting the group by offering it advice and information.
The Sheffield Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has been selling poppies to collect money for the British Legion. Under the slogan Love for all, Hatred for none, AMA has collected £60,000 nationally for the poppy appeal.
A firearm amnesty has been called in Sheffield until the 21 November. Anybody who is in possession of a gun that they do not have a license for can hand them in without fear of prosecution. However if the gun has been used in a crime then it will be investigated.
Thousands of people lined Bakers Pool, Sheffield, to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of war. This year marks the 100th year since the first world war started and 70 years since D Day.
A funday held at Weston Park looked at how literacy has changed and developed over the last 100 years. People who attended the event, got the chance to use a type writer and type their name by using the morse code.
A plaque has been unveiled to pay tribute to Sam Goodlad who was a local musician and Philanthropist in the 1800s. He supported the formation of the Blind Fiddlers of Sheffield group and the musicians played in his pub called the Q in the Corner on Paradise Square. Though the pub has long gone the musical tradition they were part of is still going strong. The original building is still there and the plaque is now hangs on its wall.
A campaign to clean Sheffield up by prosecuting fly tippers has began. Nearly £80,000 was spent on investigating this in the last year.
