Palestine campaigners in Sheffield commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Nakba, when over 700,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes in the war that led to the formation of the State of Israel. Dozens joined the gathering outside Sheffield Town Hall in solidarity with the Palestinian people including those who continue to live in refugee communities in the occupied territories and neighbouring countries. A festival celebrating Sheffield’s digital and creativity sector has been launched at the Ko-Host event space in the recently opened Castle House development. The week-long festival explores the cross-over between technology and creativity and offers an opportunity for creative and tech entrepreneurs and companies to showcase their achievements. Councillor Tony Downing has officially took over from Magid Magid as Sheffield’s new Lord Mayor. The 74 year old Labour councillor was born in Devon and moved to the city as a teenager. Dozens of climate protesters lay on the ground outside and inside Sheffield Town Hall as part of a demonstration to highlight concerns over climate change. Sheffield’s ME and Fibromyalgia Group marked ME Awareness Day with music, performers and stories at a weekend event held in Barker’s Pool. The event was part of a global campaign in more than 90 cities to raise awareness about the chronic, debilitating illness which causes severe fatigue and widespread pain. The Wednesdayite car park on Penistone Road has been transformed to host some of the world’s finest circuses with performances this week from Continental Circus Berlin. A crowdfunding campaign to raise £35,000 has been launched by Creative Arts Development Space (CADS) to help complete essential works on Sheffield’s Abbeydale Picture House. CADS have been managing for the last two years the Grade 2 listed building on Abbeydale Road and aim to relaunch the venue as a thriving arts and entertainment hub. A conference on how to tackle youth violence in the UK brought together academics, practitioners and members of the public to discuss links between youth violence, masculinity and mental health. The conference was organised as a collaboration involving the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Lord Mayor Magid Magid, Unity Gym Project & Sheffield Flourish.
