Lib Dems fill in for Hallam MPs absence

The Liberal Democrats prospective parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Hallam, Laura Gordon, has begun holding surgeries in the constituency of suspended local MP Jared O’Mara. O’Mara has not been seen publicly since issuing an apology for a series of offensive online comments dating back to 2004 and has been reported to be limiting his parliamentary activities on the advice of his doctor. The MP has been suspended by the Labour Party pending an investigation into allegations of abusive remarks towards a woman at a Sheffield nightclub earlier this year. His team have said advice surgeries are still being held with his staff and people who have a problem can contact his office. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Hanover residents fears six months after Grenfell

Residents living in the Hanover Tower block in Broomhall remain concerned at the slow pace of progress on health and safety measures, six months after the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in which 71 people died. Following the Grenfell fire, high rise buildings across the country were tested for fire safety. In Sheffield, out of 24 Council-owned tower blocks, the Hanover Tower was the only high rise to fail fire safety tests due to it’s cladding. Residents have been informed that it will take up to two years to fit new cladding to the building and to install the sprinkler systems which have been promised for all Council owned tower blocks in the city. Cyclists complain of dangerous conditions on Carlisle Street

Carlisle Street, one of the quieter routes into Sheffield, is gaining such a reputation for dirt and dangerous conditions that some cyclists are now avoiding it altogether. The mile long road is frequently covered in mud and dirt from nearby commercial premises and Sheffield cyclists are calling on business to clean up their act. Sheffield Live reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to cyclist Phil Harrison.

Abbeydale Picture House hosts Hansons charity valuation

In partnership with Sheffield Antiques Quarter, the Abbeydale Picture House is hosting the first of a series of monthly charity valuation days, hosted by celebrity auctioneer Charles Hanson. Members of the public are encouraged to bring their hidden treasures for a free valuation with all proceedings going to St Lukes Hospice. Nick Coleman reports for Sheffield Live!

Icy roads bring upsurge in complaints

Icy conditions have led to a spike in complaints about newly resurfaced pavements which are proving to be especially slippery due to the tarmac used. A Streets Ahead spokesperson told Sheffield Live! “Although a rough surface can sometimes be advantageous during periods of snow and ice, we do have to maintain footways in order to ensure that, at any point in the year, they do not provide a trip hazard and they are compliant with national standards. The surfaces we apply are smoother than the old surfaces but they are standard materials which are used extensively across the country.” Baillor Jalloh reports.

Exhibition challenges infant loss taboo

An exhibition exploring the taboo of silence around stillbirth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome is on display at The Art House Sheffield. Remembering Baby is inspired by academic research and highlights the hidden side of infant loss. It features memory boxes, notes from bereaved parents to their children and artwork illustrating their loss. The exhibition uses visual and audio art to explore how both parents and medical staff experience and encounter death “at the very beginning of life”.

Campaigners dispute £500k cost to save memorial trees

Tree campaigners have dismissed Sheffield Council’s claim that it will cost around half a million pounds to save the war memorial trees on Western Road. A Council report has assessed the financial impact of retaining the Western Road trees and making surrounding road and pavements safe, funds which the Council says would require it to re-prioritise spending on core services such as adult social care. However campaigners say the price is grossly inflated. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Film makers invited to support Sheffield Channel 4 bid

Sheffield Council have commissioned a video showcase to highlight the talent and diversity of the city in a bid to attract the Channel 4 broadcaster and are asking local filmmakers to contribute material. The Department for Culture Media and Sport is reviewing the submissions to a recent consultation on the relocation out of London of part or all the public service channel and Sheffield is among the cities pitching to host it.
