Conference puts domestic abuse in the spotlight

South Yorkshire Women’s Aid were the hosts for a women’s empowerment conference aiming to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the support services available for victims of violent relationships. The charity, which provides refuge and support for women facing violence in the home has launched a crowdfunding to maintain its service after loosing a £30,000 grant from Doncaster Council. One in two parents have not made a will, says Will Aid charity

According to new research carried out by the charity Will Aid, 57 percent of Yorkshire parents with children under eighteen have not made a will. Will Aid is promoting an annual campaign in partnership with leading law firms to offer a free will writing service with a suggested donation to raise funds for charitable causes. Last year the campaign raised over £1m for its charity partners. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Alex Gibbons from Buchanan and Co.

South Yorkshire restaurants join Rohingya support action

More than 50 restaurants in South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire have teamed up to organise a dinner evening to raise money for Rohingya refugees. According to the United Nations, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya muslims have arrived in Bangladesh with minimal belongings gathered as they fled Myanmar in the wake of sectarian violence and persecution. Charity car wash in aid of Rohingya refugees

A community group in Darnall are organising a charity car wash to raise funds for the Rohingya people that are fleeing Myanmar in the face of widespread killings and sectarian violence. Over half a million Rohingya men, women and children have fled the country since the violence began, according to the United Nations. Most have sought refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh. Identities explored in Winter Gardens exhibition

Arts charity, Ignite Imaginations, has presented a new exhibition at Sheffield Winter Gardens exploring issues of mental health and identity. The project has been development in partnership with Adullam Homes and support of the National Lottery. Former Owls star and England international in charity book signing

Former Sheffield Wednesday and England international footballer, Carlton Palmer, has launched his autobiography with a book signing in aid of the Cavendish Cancer Care charity. Palmer has committed 20 per cent of the cover price of signed copies to be donated to the charity. The retired midfielder said he has lost many friends to cancer and called it “the devils disease”.  Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Carlton Palmer at Owlerton Stadium.

Open house at Amy’s House

Special needs charity, Amy’s House, is offering coffee mornings and specialist advice to support children with disabilities and their families. It was a full house at Amy’s House this week with advice on offer from hearing loss specialists Bloom Audiologists. Amy’s House was set up after founder Jayne Hurdicth, lost her daughter Amy to meningitis and her youngest daughter, Molly, was born with special needs. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Pop-up art exhibition in Arundel Gate underpass

A pop-up art exhibition has been on display at the Arundel Gate underpass  giving passers by the chance to view work by talented local artists and to put in a bid by silent auction. Money raised will be donated to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as part of the programme of events sponsored by IKEA in the run up to the launch of their new Sheffield store. Dan Walker hosts celebrity golf fundraiser

TV presenter and patron of the Children’s Hospital Charity, Dan Walker, held his fourth annual sporting celebrity golf tournament to raise funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Last year’s event brought in over £60,000 towards a multipurpose flouroscopy system which enables rapid diagnosis and surgical intervention without a child needing to go into the operating theatre.
