South Yorkshire Police are raising awareness of the dangers when driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In the run up to the festive period, they have been advising the public in local bars and on social media. As part of a national campaign, Police have been stopping people and using Roadside Drug testing kits, if they suspect the driver may have drugs in their system.
Two Sheffield charities have joined together in a campaign to help keep homeless people warm. ‘The Sheffield Coat Drive’ has been organised by young people’s homeless charity, Roundabout, and The Cathedral Archer Project. They’re encouraging people to drop off unwanted coats, which can either be given to rough sleepers or sold in the Roundabout charity shop on Union Street.
The UK’s first Tram Train has been unveiled in Sheffield today. The vehicle designed to run on the city’s tramlines and rail network is expected to be fully in service by early 2017. Passengers will be able to make a single journey from Sheffield to the Park Gate retail centre in Rotherham, via Meadowhall and the Rotherham Central station.

Work has officially begun in Darnall and the Manor area of Sheffield to build new council houses. It is all part of Sheffield City Council’s scheme to provide an extra one thousand council homes by 2020. The 7.5 million pound development is being funded through the Council’s housing revenue account and the sale of Right to Buy council homes.
A full size nativity is on display in Owlerton, to show the community the true meaning of Christmas. The display, outside St John’s Church on Penistone Road changes each week to highlight different parts of the story.
This week at Jolleys Pet Store at Meadowhall Retail Park, Finding Furever Homes were there looking for donations, they directly support the smaller, privately run shelters where dedicated individuals take a huge amount of time and effort to rescue dogs from the pounds and prevent them being put to sleep.
It’s Anger Awareness Week, the aim is to identify anger as a disturbing social issue which should be brought out into the open and addressed effectively. It helps people befriend anger by using the right tools to calm themselves down and to deal effectively with this emotion, be it of their own or that of others. Sheffield Mind and Body are currently running a 12 week Anger Management programme and Sheffield Live went along today to chat to members Devon and Daniel about their journey….
Many protesters gathered at Sheffield town hall earlier today to protest against the new changes and cuts to bus services. An online petition to stop the cutting and bring back the old services has reached 12,000 signatories.
Thousands of gifts have been donated by people in South Yorkshire for Samaritan’s Operation Christmas Child. The charity tries to make sure many children living in poverty around the world get a present at Christmas. The public have dropped shoe boxes full of presents off at a number of locations, and now they are being sorted and packed. We sent our reporter, Kathryn Smiles, along to an industrial unit in Handsworth to find out more.
