Know the Line campaign tackles sexual harassment

A new multi-agency campaign has been launched to tackle sexual harassment of women and girls in South Yorkshire supported by Sheffield Council, South Yorkshire Police and community partners. The Know the Line campaign seeks to challenge the attitudes of perpetrators of sexual harassment and to encourage members of the public to look out for the safety of women and girls. New innings for community cricket nets

Sharrow youngsters hoping to follow in the footsteps of Joe Root are to benefit from £28,000 investment in cricket nets and facilities at Mount Pleasant Park. Council seeks views on landlord licensing scheme

Sheffield Council are set to launch a thirteen week consultation on a new landlord licensing scheme to improve the safety and standard of privately rented homes and how they are managed. The proposals are to include a selective licensing scheme for sections of London Road, Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road, after inspections found three in four rented properties in the area had safety issues that were exposing people to serious risk. The council will be asking local landlords, residents, tenants and businesses to comment on the proposals which would affect around 1,000 homes in a four mile stretch. The consultation opens on 27 November and runs for an eight week period. Baillot Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Council signs up to charter for ethical homecare

Sheffield Council have signed up to UNISON’s Ethical Care Charter including commitments to care workers’ rights and an end to zero hours contracts. Under the charter, the local authority will work with Sheffield’s care providers to help them replace zero hours contracts with guaranteed hours and to reflect travel time between home care visits in care workers’ pay. The authority has also pledged to work with care providers to help them move towards paying the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended minimum £8.45 per hour to all of their employees. Council to kick-start new housing development

Sheffield Council has committed over £3 million in loan funding to build 1,000 new homes as part of a deal with developer Sheffield Housing Company. The agreement will support new housing in the Manor, Norfolk Park, Parsons Cross and other locations where the Council has land available. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield drivers to face 20mph city centre speed limit

A new 20mph per hour speed limit is to be introduced in Sheffield’s city centre following a Council-led public consultation. The aim is to cut speed and accidents as well as reducing pollution. Sheffield Council are planning for the new speed limit to come in to effect by the end of the year. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Councillors Jack Scott and Moya O Rourke.

Council seeks new tree campaign prosecutions

Sheffield Council are seeking fresh prosecutions of tree campaigners for allegedly breaching a recent injunction relating to tree felling. Simon Crump from Myrtle Road and others were handed the legal notices today after crossing safety barriers on Meersbrook Park Road set up by council contractors undertaking tree felling works. The court injunction was issued in August to eighteen people including Councillor Alison Teal after they previously crossed safety barriers in a bid to stop the felling of trees. Council injunction on tree protestors comes in to force

The Sheffield Council injunction to prevent direct action by Sheffield tree protesters comes into force on Wednesday following the recent court decision. Campaigners trying to stop the felling of Sheffield trees have announced they will not appeal against the injunction. Channel 4 relocation could deliver £1bn to the local economy

Sheffield Council have released details of their bid to bring Channel 4 to Sheffield including visualisations of a TV production headquarters next to Sheffield Station. Sheffield is one of several cities that have thrown their hat into the ring in respond to a government consultation on moving the public service channel out of London. It is estimated a Sheffield headquarters could bring over 4,000 highly skilled jobs to the city by 2027. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Tree campaigners stage Town Hall protest

Dozens of people joined a protest outside the Town Hall as part of the campaign to halt the felling of trees by Sheffield Council and contractor Amey. The protest follows a threat of legal injunction sent last week to 17 people, including Green Party councillor Alison Teal, which seeks to prevent action to disrupt Amey from carrying out their work.
