‘Tata Steel plans to sell UK business’

Thousands of steel worker jobs are at risk, as India’s Tata Steel plans to sell it’s UK business. The decision was announced at a board meeting in Mumbai last night. Tata’s Port Talbot steel plant, as well as sites in Corby, Shotton and here in South Yorkshire are believed to be affected. High energy costs and cheap imports from China have been blamed for the recent cuts in demand.

Hundreds join ‘Save Our Steel’ rally in Sheffield

Hundreds of people took part in a rally in Sheffield today, to call on the Government to take action and save the British steel industry. The Trade Union Council, steel workers from across the country and their families marched from Tudor Square to the City Hall, where they heard from a number of speakers. Thousands of job cuts have already been announced in Scunthorpe, Teeside and Lanarkshire. The TUC fear more cuts will hit South Yorkshire.
