Work has officially begun in Darnall and the Manor area of Sheffield to build new council houses. It is all part of Sheffield City Council’s scheme to provide an extra one thousand council homes by 2020. The 7.5 million pound development is being funded through the Council’s housing revenue account and the sale of Right to Buy council homes.
The race relations act was passed 50 years ago today, which was used in order to target the racism and discriminiation that migrants coming from the empire to the UK to work experienced. Many protesters gathered at Sheffield town hall earlier today to protest against the new changes and cuts to bus services. An online petition to stop the cutting and bring back the old services has reached 12,000 signatories.
The British Figure Skating Championships have begun today at ice Sheffield. Thirteen year old Margot Orange from Sheffield finished tenth, with 28.62 points.
Thousands of gifts have been donated by people in South Yorkshire for Samaritan’s Operation Christmas Child. The charity tries to make sure many children living in poverty around the world get a present at Christmas. The public have dropped shoe boxes full of presents off at a number of locations, and now they are being sorted and packed. We sent our reporter, Kathryn Smiles, along to an industrial unit in Handsworth to find out more.
