Rotherham child sexual abuse victims exceed 1500

The National Crime Agency has said that Operation Stovewood, the investigation into historic child sexual abuse in Rotherham, has now identified 1,510 victims of which 85 per cent are female. The investigation also reported that 110 suspects have been identified. At a briefing event, senior investigating officer Paul Williamson said his team of 144 officers were working on 34 investigations and engaging with over 260 survivors. Equalities survey finds employers failing on women’s rights

British employers are described as ‘living in the dark ages’ and having worrying attitudes towards unlawful behaviour when it comes to recruiting women, according to a new report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. In a survey of more then 1000 private sector business managers around a third agreed it is reasonable during recruitment to ask women about their plans for children in the future. Charlotte Mead, of the Sheffield branch of the Women’s Equality Party told Sheffield Live! she is not surprised by the findings. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffielders call for solidarity with migrants

Hundreds took part in a march from Devonshire Green to Sheffield Town Hall as part of a national day of action to celebrate diversity and the contribution of migrants to British society. The “1 Day Without Us” campaign grew from an idea posted on social media by Sheffield author and journalist Matt Carr in response to the rise of xenophobia after the Brexit vote. It has grown into a national and international solidarity campaign with action groups in towns and cities across the UK. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Conservation volunteers clean up Ochre Dyke

Local volunteers put their wellies on to help clean up and maintain the Ochre Dyke stream in Crystal Peaks as part of an environmental conservation and improvement project. The work is coordinated by the River Stewardship Company, a Sheffield-based social enterprise working to maintain Sheffield’s waterways for people and wildlife. Sheffield school re-opens after crash

Fir Vale School in Page Hall has re-opened on Wednesday after an incident on Tuesday morning when a black BMW was driven at speed into the school grounds before it ploughed into the front doors of the school. Two men were arrested in what South Yorkshire Police describe as “an isolated incident”. No staff or students were reported to have been injured but the school was evacuated. Workers celebrate HeartUnions week

Trades unionists gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall on Monday demanding a better pay for public sector workers and an end to zero hours contract as part of the TUC’s HeartUnions Week. The demonstration was organised by Sheffield Trades Union Council. It comes ahead of two days of industrial action planned for next week by the University and College Union who are seeking protection of their pension scheme. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
