Campaigners protest over planned Smithy Wood service station

More than 150 people demonstrated outside Sheffield Town Hall over plans to build a motorway service station in ancient woodland at junction 35 of the M1. The £45 million development would include a fast food court, 80 bed hotel and a car park in Smithy Wood, near Thorpe Hesley. The protest was organised by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust who are campaigning to block the proposal by developer MSA Extra and landowner St Paul’s. The planned development has been subject of a long-running dispute. A final decision was expected to be reached by Sheffield councillors on March 8 but has been post poned until further notice.
