Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council resigns

Councillor Leigh Brammal, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council has resigned from his role with immediate affect and is to stand down as Labour councillor for Southey. Councillor Bramall, 42, has represented Southey ward since 2004 and was appointed deputy leader of the council in 2015. Bramall said the decision to leave was a wrench, but “it is the right decision for me and my family”. He is understood to be taking up a position with a communications company in Sheffield. Sheffield Council may cut short Veolia waste contract

Sheffield Council leaders are considering proposals to end the authority’s waste contract with provider Veolia. Veolia is responsible for collection and disposal of household waste, running waste recycling centres and managing and operating the Energy Recovery Facility at Bernard Road. The contract was signed in 2001 and is set to expire in 2036. At Sheffield City Council’s cabinet meeting next week, members will consider alternative solutions to provide waste services in the city. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Councillor Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for the environment.

Sheffield City Council is seeking more funding to support and house refugees

Councillor Jayne Dunn, cabinet member for housing on Sheffield City Council, is asking the government to give local authorities more money to help refugees. Her plea comes after more than a hundred refugee children arrived in the UK last week from the Calais camp known as the “Jungle.” On Wednesday, French authorities in Calais announced completion of the operation to move thousands of migrants out of the camp. The announcement came as parts of the Jungle continued to burn after fires were set overnight and in the morning. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

The Lord Mayor Visits Sheffield Live!

Recently, we were very pleased to welcome Sheffield’s new mayor; Cllr Graham Oxley into Sheffield Live! for an interview with Irini Apostolidou from Communities Live!, our daily news programme about Sheffield.

During their discussions, Irini asked Mr Oxley about his involvement in politics, the Lord Mayor’s responsibilities, the city of Sheffield and the council’s overall performance.

The interview was first broadcast on the 9th June, in the Tuesday edition of ‘Communities Live!’ at 12pm and repeated the same day at 5pm.
