Council invites comments on new Retail Quarter

Plans have been released today for the new Sheffield Retail Quarter, set to open in 2019. The plans will transform the Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street and Moor Head area, whilst preserving the historic character of the City.  Plans can be seen at the Town Hall all this week. The Retail Quarter will include a range of up market and Independent shops, new offices, homes and restaurants.

Kerry Needham “most confident she’s been in finding her son in 24 years.”

Kerry Needham returned from Greece after making a TV appearance on a missing persons show with her Mum Christine.  Kerrys’ son  Ben went missing on the Island of Kos nearly 24 years ago when he was just 21 months old.  Over 80 people responded to the programme saying that they had information about Ben.  Kerry and Christine both feel confident the new leads will give them the answer to where Ben is.

Hindu Festival of Chariots celebrated in Endlciffe Park

The Rathayatra Festival was celebrated in Sheffield for the second year running.  The Hindu Festival original believed to be 5,000 years old,  has the deities, Lord Jagannatha and his sister Subhdara and brother Balabhadra travelling through the streets on Chariots so that the wider public gets a chance to see them. Lord Jagannatha is one of the representations  of Lord Krishna.  When the British first saw the Festival they were said to be so over awed by the size of the Chariots that the name Jagannatha became the root of the word Juggeranaut in English.

Event to try to save Sheffield trees and woodland

An event that is looking at Sheffields’ trees and woodland is taking place this weekend.  The event which is called Action for Woods and Trees is being organized as part of Sheffield Environment Weeks one of the aims of the event is to  to establish a network of groups help manage our treescapes  for future generations.

Possible devolution for Sheffield

The Government has announced that it is looking at Devolution of Cities like Sheffield as long as they agree to have an elected Mayor.  This would give Sheffield more of a say in its Housing, Policing and Transport policies. Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council said she is willing to look at all options on the table while local people had mixed feelings about it.

Hillsborough inquest hears of youngest victims last moments

Jon Paul Gilhooley, 10  was the youngest of the 96 Liverpool fans to lose their life. Former Police Officer Phillip Woodward gave evidence in to Jon-Paul’s death and described the scene at Hillsborough as ‘like walking into hell’. The jury heard how the young cousin of Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard, attended the match with his uncles.

Kerry Needham travels to Athens

Kerry Needham is appearing on Greek TV in a missing persons show to talk about her son Ben who went missing 24 years ago.  Ben Needham was 21 months old when he went missing while he was playing outside his Grandparents farmhouse on the Greek Island of Kos.

Rotherham roll out Adopt a Post Office Scheme

Concerns raised by Rotherham Older People’s Forum and Age UK about community safety have lead to them working in partnership with South Yorkshire Police and the Post Office. The scheme will see a Police Community Support Officer designed to a Post Office to give reassurance to those using the services.
