Dr Chris Blackmore and Dr Fusida Siros from the University of Sheffield are behind the idea of Good News Friday, encouraging the public to declare their thanks for something, whether big, small, personal or universal. A new report by the RAC suggests nine million drivers are using their mobile phones illegally whilst driving a vehicle. The report released reveals the number has fallen by a quarter compare to last year, but many are still texting or answering their phones despite tougher penalties being introduced during the year. An unusual sculpture of a peregrine falcon created with Allen keys is display outside Sheffield’s train station as part of IKEA’s Wonderful Everyday tour of Sheffield. The sculpture was designed by local artist Jason Heppenstall who is known for his animal designs made of reclaimed materials. The Olympic Legacy Park in the Don Valley has been officially opened by the former Sheffield MP and ex-Sports Minister, Richard Caborn. The 35 acre complex is set to be part of an innovation distrct for health and wellbeing research and learning including the new UTC college, Oasis Academy School and an indoor arena that will be home to Sheffield Sharks basketball team. The outdoor spaces will feature two running routes, a 100m track and 3G sports pitches. The park will also include a hotel and business offices. Ashlee Lovebox of Sheffield is attempting to break a Guinness world record for hula hoop spinning in the hope of raising cash for a dog shelter in Cyprus. Hundreds of campaigners and local residents joined a No Frack Day rally at the proposed INEOS fracking site near Eckington. The rally began at Coal Aston Village Hall with a march to the proposed site in Bramleymoor Lane, off Marsh Lane.
