South Yorkshire devolution deal agreed

Political leaders have agreed this week to move forward with a South Yorkshire devolution deal nearly five years after the deal was initially announced. Under the original deal struck in October 2015 the Sheffield City Region deal would grant a directly elected mayor powers over transport, strategic planning and skills, as well as £900M investment over 30 years. In an interview with Sheffield Live! Sheffield City Region Mayor, Dan Jarvis, said: “It’s a really good deal, everybody is a winner, there are no losers.”

The government has given the green light to the long-awaited South Yorkshire devolution deal after accepting the latest proposal from the four local authorities. James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, confirmed the agreement in a letter to Sheffield City Region mayor Dan Jarvis and the leaders of Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster councils. The deal could bring up to £30m per annum in government cash for the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority and see the devolution of transport, housing and skills provision for as long as the combined authority is in existence. Councillor joins race to be city region mayor

Sheffield Councillor, Ben Curran, has confirmed his intention to stand as Labour candidate for election as mayor of Sheffield City Region. Curran is one of three candidates in the party to stand, including former Sheffield Central MP, Richard Caborn and Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley Central. Elections for the mayor’s position are scheduled for May as part of a £900m devolution deal. Labour is the first party to announce their candidates. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
