Animal rights protest against greyhound racing

Animal rights activists mounted a protest outside Owlerton Stadium in Hillsborough to call for an end to greyhound racing. Organisers of the demonstration said the group were seeking to raise awareness of the mistreatment of greyhounds in the sport including the disappearance or killing of thousands of dogs every year. Sheffield charities work to address ‘cat crisis’

Animal charities and local vet practices have come together in Sheffield to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens. The initiative responds to an eight per cent increase in cats brought to the RSPCA over the last two years, with a total of 31,000 in the last year alone. Six charities and eight vets are taking part in the project. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Carrie Stones, RSPCA cat population control manager for the north.

National Funding for PDSA to protect pets from illnesses

Charity, PDSA, has received five hundred and fifty thousand pounds in national funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery, to help protect animals from a number of illnesses. The money will also be used to educate pet owners, cover thousands of vaccinations and provide micro chips for cats and dogs. Joanne Smith has been selected as a specialist ‘Pet Champion’ at the PDSA Sheffield Pet Hospital, and will help run the scheme. She told our reporter, Kathryn Smiles, how she felt to get the funding.
