50 years ago this year, the ladies of the ford plant in Dagenham took a stand and went on strike for equal pay attracting interest worldwide. This is still a relevant issue to this day, as in recent news large supermarket chains have been in the headlines accused of favouring men in their pay system. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to bring this issue back to the forefront and show their respect to the ladies who put their jobs on the line for what they believed to be right, Dronfield Musical Theatre Group have chosen to give an honourable nod to the ladies of Ford Dagenham in their anniversary year, by staging the critically acclaimed “Made in Dagenham” at the Dronfield Civic Hall in October. Rita O’Grady, who heads the strike is being played by Sophie Robinson, who has been performing since a very young age, and got the taste for leading lady roles after playing Annie at the Montgomery Theatre in 1995. Sophie won scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music and then later took her acting skills to the countries capital where she did a lot of professional performing. Having moved back to Sheffield with her family, she heard that DMTG were performing Made in Dagenham, and joined the group immediately. She loves the show and is so excited to be playing such a fabulous role.
Taking on the task of Director for this roaring production, is Andrew Hibbert, who has taken roles in DMTG’s shows in the past but wanted to put his true stamp on a show whilst being given the opportunity to get his creative hat on. Andrew is no stranger to the show, in fact he performed the role of Mr Hopkins in the Sheffield Lyceum production of the same show back in 2016. Andrew has been trading the boards since the age of 10, when he joined the cast of Oliver at the Sheffield Montgomery and has never looked back, performing in over 60 musicals since.
Andy told us, “It seemed fitting to be able to stage this truly British musical not only exactly 50 years since the event on which it is based, but also in the year that marks the centenary of women being given the vote. I thought it was an incredible show when I performed it before, and instantly fell in love with it and it tells the story of the battle the women had, beautifully, through song”.
