Volunteering celebrated in Rotherham Big Walk

The Big Walk is one of a series of events to celebrate thousands of people who contribute as volunteers, giving their time to do something for the community. Azz Mohammed spoke to event organiser Alison Thorp of Voluntary Action Rotherham and Chief Superintendent Rob Odell of South Yorkshire Police.

Thousands of children on scout waiting list

The Scout Organisation have reported a waiting list of over 51,000 children due to a shortage of adult volunteers. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said it was a “challenge” to recruit more adult volunteers to support youngsters wanting to become Scouts, Beavers, Cubs or Explorers. Charity offers trio of opportunities to support the homeless

The Archer Project is asking supporters to get involved in food parcel sorting and meals service alongside their annual sleep-out for the homeless. The number of rough sleepers in the UK is on the rise for the sixth successive year with official figures showing over 4000 people sleeping out in 2016, more than double the numbers of 2010. As part of their annual fundraising sleep-out, Sheffield charity the Cathedral Archer Project are inviting volunteers to help out with food parcels, breakfast and lunch for the homeless. Walkley Library celebrates two years as a community-run library

Walkley Library, which was saved from closure in 2014 after a community campaign, is celebrating two years of running independently as a community library with the support of local volunteers. At an open event to celebrate the achievement members of the public were invited to take part in activities aimed at showing the range of services on offer and to contribute to a survey on further improvements. Volunteers organise to support Tent City homeless

Sheffield’s ‘Tent City’, set up outside Park Hill flats to assist some of the local homeless, has been benefiting from donations and support from the general public. Appeals launched on social media have encouraged people to bring food, clothes, medical supplies and bedding. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke with a mother and daughter volunteering team.

A helping hand

The Samaritans are a 24 hour help line that is open every day of the year. The service which supports anybody who needs someone to talk to is run by 130 volunteers in Sheffield.
