Union demands better conditions for student workers

Unite the Union is calling on Sheffield University’s Students Union management to end zero hours contracts and to offer its student workers the real living wage. Unite Union says hundreds of students are employed by the University’s student union on a casual bases earning less than £118 a week meaning they do not qualify for statutory sick pay. City Hall rally for university staff strike

Thousands took part in a rally outside City Hall in support of strike action called by staff from Sheffield’s two universities and from other higher education institutions across the country. Staff at both of universities are taking action for better pay and working conditions, with many complaining about excessive workloads. University of Sheffield staff are also taking action for improved pensions. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Jane Fearon, branch secretary for the University College Union at Sheffield Hallam.

Students launch NHS action group

Students at the University of Sheffield have launched an action group to defend the NHS with over 100 students joining since its launch at the start of the university term. Founder and medical student Dan Veness told Sheffield Live! the group plans to work alongside the Sheffield Save Our NHS campaign and has the backing of the Sheffield Students Union. Students warned to beware of tax scams

University students in Sheffield are being warned to be vigilant as a wave of tax scams are circulating using fake university email addresses. HM Revenue & Customs has received thousands of fraud reports from students across the UK with emails telling students that they are owed money and encouraging them to send their personal details. Results day for A-level students

The University of Sheffield call centre took 1400 calls within the first two hours of opening as students across the country received their 2018 A-level results. For some the results will confirm admission to their chosen course and university while others will to look to the clearing system in the hope of securing a university place. Sheffield Live spoke to Dr Christina Edgar, director of student recruitment at the University of Sheffield.

Hundreds join rally in support of university staff

Hundreds joined a rally from the University of Sheffield to Barker’s Pool in support of university staff on strike in a row over proposed changes to their pension scheme. Lecturers, represented in the dispute by the University and College Union, say the changes could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

University staff strike over pensions row

University staff on strike together with students and other supporters held a rally outside the University of Sheffield on Western bank in a protest over changes to staff pensions which would see many worse off after retirement. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Craig Brandist, president of Sheffield University branch of the University and Colleges Union.

Mobile classroom promotes higher education

A new campaign is taking a mobile classroom on the road in a bid to increase the number of South Yorkshire teenagers going in to higher education. Education chiefs involved in Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire launched the mobile classroom in Barkers Pool with students from the University Technical College among the first to road test the new vehicle.  The campaign will travel across South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. Research shows that fewer young people in the region go on to higher education at either a further education college or a university.
