National campaign highlights apprenticeship opportunities

Sheffield College expects to place around ninety 16 to 24 year olds into apprenticeship vacancies as part of the National Apprenticeship Week campaign. The week long promotion highlights the benefits of apprenticeships for the young people involved as well as for the employer and wider community. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Matt Green of Bryan Bond Architects and their first apprentice, Olivia Eades.

Learn to Recreate, a Sheffield-based social enterprise, has been showcasing world fashion products made in Sheffield. The company provides fashion and textile crafts training and support for entry to employment with a commitment to ethical and eco-friendly materials. Nick Coleman reports for Sheffield Live!

Weekend warriors take to battle in Burngreave arena

The UK’s first full contact armoured combat training arena has arrived in Sheffield at a community hall in Burngreave. The idea comes from the world of Historical Medieval Battle, an extreme sport based around armoured combat, with fighters assigned to teams and equipped with padded armour, shield and sword. The Northern Lists arena is the brainchild of David Murray. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Learn for Life community hub shortlisted in fund competition

Learn for Life, a community hub based on London Road, has been shortlisted in the Aviva Community Fund competition. The competition offers the chance for local community projects to gain additional funding, with the winner decided by members of the public voting online for their favourite community project. Learn for Life provide training, advice and support for vulnerable members of the community.

Firefighters out in force for emergency response training

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services have tested their capability to respond to a major blaze as part of a service-wide exercise. Dozens of emergency services vehicles lined up outside the former Prince Edward Primary School on Queen Mary Road. The operation, involving more than 60 on duty firefighters and 10 standard fire engines, was the biggest training session of the year. Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Martin Blunden.

Photoshop CS4 Training at Sheffield Live!

Adobe Photoshop is the industry’s leading digital image editing software. It is the perfect creative tool for designing and manipulating images for print layouts, web publishing, multimedia, video, photography and visually expressing your creative ideas. The ‘Showroom’ in partnership with Sheffield Live! is offering two weekend courses in May to improve your skills in this amazing software package. These sessions will take place in the new Sheffield Live! computer suite and participants will gain expert tuition in the core elements of Adobe Photoshop CS4

Weekend One: Level 1: Beginners
Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th of May
10.00am – 5.00pm

The course will be filled with a number of hands-on tutorials which you’ll work through with help from your tutor. Some of the features you’ll learn are:

• Navigating your way through the Photoshop CS4 workspace.
• How to use ‘auto correction’ tools to fix common problems with tones, contrasts and colours.
• How to crop and resize images.
• How to use healing brushes to fix blemishes within a photograph
• Understand the basic use of layers.
• Adding text to photographs.
• How to easily apply filters to create stunning special effects.
• How to save and print your images.

Weekend Two: Level 2: Intermediary
Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd of May

The course will be filled with a number of hands-on tutorials which you’ll work through with help from your tutor. Some of the features you’ll learn are:

• Navigating your way through the Photoshop workspace
• The benefits of working in a more ‘Non-Destructive’ style
• How using filter and pixel masks can give you more control over your work
• How adjustment layers can fix most common problems
• How to create smart objects
• How to ‘touch up’ photographs like the professionals
• Understanding how to paint in all various ‘colour modes’
• How to use a ‘vanishing point’ to edit in perspective
• How to use Photoshop as a 3D editing tool
