GB wheelchair basketball recognised in Hall of Champions

The GB men’s wheelchair basketball team have been inducted into the Hall of Champions at the English Institute of Sport in recognition of their 2018 World Championships win in Hamburg. The team profile joins the likes of Anthony Joshua and Jessica Ennis in the Hall of Champions gallery. Its the first time the team has won the World Championship trophy and they are one of the youngest teams in the world with an average age of 27. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Haj Bhania, GB Men’s Wheelchair Basketball coach.

English Institute of Sport hosts disability sports celebration

Sheffield Council and disability sport charity, Within Reach, celebrated seventeen years of partnership with festival of sport including wheelchair basketball, athletics and boccia. Over four hundred children and adults were joined by special appearances from public figures, including athletes and local councillors. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Mike Elliot, chair of Within Reach.

Sheffield hosts end of season goalball tournament

The English Institute of Sport played host to an end of season tournament and awards event for goalball, the only paralympic team sport designed for the visually impaired. Played with raised markings on the floor, blindfolds are used to ensure an even playing field as players locate the ball through sound. Goalball is played by men and women and Goalball UK has supported a highly successful national women’s team. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

 

En garde! Fencing stars of the future

The Junior Fencing Championships took place at the English Institute of Sport over the bank holiday weekend. Fencing has recently had its Olympic funding cut but at grassroots level the sport is thriving and is keen to shake off accusations of elitism. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Top British athletes compete in Sheffield at Indoor Team Trials

Britain’s leading athletes are competing this weekend for a place on the British Athletics team as Sheffield hosts the Indoor Team Trials at the English Institute of Sport. Winners at the trials will be crowned British Champion and will be in the running for a place on the British team for the European Indoor Championships, to be held in Belgrade in March.The English Institute for Sport in Sheffield has become the home of the national Indoor Team Trials and the best of Sheffield and Rotherham athletes will be among those competing at the event.
