Trauma recovery centre wins £250k Northern Powerhouse funding

Steps Rehabilitation, which helps people to recover from brain or spinal injuries and complex trauma, has secured a £250,000 loan from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund. The cash will help the company grow its services as a national centre of excellence for people recovering from serious illness and accidents. The centre built at the former Jacobs engineering works, off Abbeydale Road, opened in May this year. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

City centre businesses help spend a penny

A new Sheffield city centre scheme has been launched to encourage businesses to offer free public use of their rest rooms to shoppers caught out. Searching for a toilet can be embarrassing with people reluctant to use services if they are not purchasing a product. The new scheme will signpost to rest rooms available for public use at participating business. So far twelve businesses have signed up and signage has been put in place to provide directions. Council confirms closure of Hurlfield View dementia centre

Sheffield Council has confirmed the controversial closure plan for Hurlfield View dementia centre in Gleadless despite a public campaign to retain the facility. The centre is scheduled to be closed at the end of March after which overnight respite care is to be referred to other care homes across the city and day centre support will be offered through other providers. The Council is in the final stages of procuring new contracts with providers and has promised to release further details later this month. New centre opens its doors to victims of sexual assault

A new facility to support victims of rape and sexual assault in South Yorkshire has opened as part of the regional Sexual Assault Referral Centre. South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings and Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox were present for the opening of the centre which offers a safe haven for victims and a range of services including medical examinations. According to the Crown Prosecution Service domestic abuse, rape and other sexual assault offences against women and girls increased by almost 10 per cent in England in 2015.
