Drumming up awareness of mental health

A mortgage advisor from Chesterfield has been playing a percussion marathon at Yellow Arch Studios to raise awareness of mental health issues. Martin Conlon aims to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity Mental Health UK. Conlon said he was doing it to honour the memory of his son who died, age 23, after suffering from mental health problems. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Diabetes can lead to very serious health situations including leg amputations and blindness yet many people are unaware of dangers or the distinction between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Police launch new campaign on drink driving

South Yorkshire Police are urging drivers to avoid driving during the festive period while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The campaign to discourage people from irresponsible drinking emphasises safety and alcohol awareness with the aim to reduce drink driving, alcohol related violent crime, vulnerability, domestic violence and underage drinking. Additional measures include drink drive enforcement, test purchasing, the roll out of fixed penalty notices, working with licensed premises and increased patrols to deter people from drink driving. Public health campaign seeks to raise HIV awareness

Sheffield’s public health unit is getting behind the national HIV Awareness Week to raise awareness of the disease and the benefits of getting tested. The week long campaign which runs up to 1st December, World AIDS Day will highlight the impact of HIV on people’s lives and promote access to the screening tests available. ‘The Big Ride’ for Palestine

Cyclist from Sheffield, London, Bristol and Edinburgh have been taking part in the big ride for Palestine. Riders from our city left on Saturday and arrived at Elbit factory in Shenstone on Monday afternoon where they protested against the manufacturing of drones which they claimed are sent to Israel and are use against civilians. ‘The Big Ride’ is an initiative by supporters of the Palestinian people which combines a love of cycling with practical solidarity and awareness raising, especially around the plight of children in Gaza. Musheir Elfara is the chair for the Sheffield Palestine solidarity.
