Exhibition challenges infant loss taboo

An exhibition exploring the taboo of silence around stillbirth, miscarriage and sudden infant death syndrome is on display at The Art House Sheffield. Remembering Baby is inspired by academic research and highlights the hidden side of infant loss. It features memory boxes, notes from bereaved parents to their children and artwork illustrating their loss. The exhibition uses visual and audio art to explore how both parents and medical staff experience and encounter death “at the very beginning of life”.

Identities explored in Winter Gardens exhibition

Arts charity, Ignite Imaginations, has presented a new exhibition at Sheffield Winter Gardens exploring issues of mental health and identity. The project has been development in partnership with Adullam Homes and support of the National Lottery. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Louisa Golob, chief executive of Ignite Imaginations.

Art studios upgrade planned for Castlegate quarter

Sheffield-based Yorkshire Artspace has submitted plans to refurbish its Exchange Place studios in the Castlegate quarter as a location for artists and creatives. The former South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive building will house up to 80 artists but is in need of modernisation. The organisation has been awarded a £500,000 grant from the Arts Council for work to commence. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

New sculpture park at Park Hill

The second phase of the Park Hill flats redevelopment has been launched with the unveiling of Sculpture Park Hill, part of a new public artspace. The first commission and the only permanent work planned for the 3.5 acre site are a series of disc-shaped concrete plinths. The Park Hill Plinths have been designed through a collaboration between artist Keith Wilson and landscape architect Tim Osborne. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Tinsley art project re-imagines industrial past

Following the unveiling of plans for the region’s largest ever public art project, Sheffield Live! spoke to artist Alex Chinneck about the ideas and inspirations behind the planned sculpture trail. The £450,000 Onwards and Upwards project funded by E.ON, will use 100,000 bricks and features five chimneys. Two form an arch across the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, one appears to float in mid-air, another is tied in a knot and a fifth appears cracked and illuminated from within. Pop-up art exhibition in Arundel Gate underpass

A pop-up art exhibition has been on display at the Arundel Gate underpass  giving passers by the chance to view work by talented local artists and to put in a bid by silent auction. Money raised will be donated to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as part of the programme of events sponsored by IKEA in the run up to the launch of their new Sheffield store. Allen key peregrine on display

An unusual sculpture of a peregrine falcon created with Allen keys is display outside Sheffield’s train station as part of IKEA’s Wonderful Everyday tour of Sheffield.  The sculpture was designed by local artist Jason Heppenstall who is known for his animal designs made of reclaimed materials. It is part of a series of events to mark the launch of the company’s new store in Tinsley. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Nether Edge Festival kicks off with carnival

The week long Nether Edge Festival has launched with an official opening and carnival at St Peter’s Hall Common Ground on Machon Bank Road. The family friendly event features music, concerts, art, literature and sports activities and culminates with the Party in the Park on 24 September. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
