Palestine campaigners mark Nakba exodus

Palestine campaigners in Sheffield commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Nakba, when over 700,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes in the war that led to the formation of the State of Israel. Dozens joined the gathering outside Sheffield Town Hall in solidarity with the Palestinian people including those who continue to live in refugee communities in the occupied territories and neighbouring countries. Orgreave campaigners hold 34th anniversary rally

Hundreds joined a rally to mark the 34th anniversary of the Battle of Orgreave as campaigners continue to make the case for a public enquiry. In October 2016 Home Secretary Amber Rudd announced there would be no public enquiry but campaigners, including Brightside and Hillsborough MP, Gill Furniss, are calling on the Government and new Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to think again. Netherlands Circus comes to Sheffield

The Netherlands National Circus has arrived in Sheffield as part of a UK tour with a show featuring acrobats, clowns, illusion and pyrotechnics. The tour coincides with the 250th anniversary year for circus in the UK. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Foyer celebrates 20th anniversary

The pioneering Sheffield Foyer hostel for homeless young people is celebrating its twentieth anniversary since its opening in 1997 as one of the first foyer projects in South Yorkshire. The Sheffield Foyer at Ironmonger House is a 60-bed hostel offering supported accommodation, training and guidance to young homeless people aged 16-25 and enabling residents to move on to their own tenancy and find employment. Union campaign celebrates NHS birthday

Health workers are celebrating 69 years of the NHS with a campaign to highlight health service achievements and the challenges of underfunding. Members of Unison have been travelling across the region, encouraging people to sign a giant birthday card and to share their stories of the NHS. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Plaque unveiled for 2007 Sheffield floods anniversary

A plaque has been unveiled at Riverside Park on Nursery Street to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sheffield Flood of 2007. Ten years ago, on 25 June 2017, heavy rain caused devastating floods in Sheffield and other parts of the region, leaving two people dead and causing an estimated £1 billion of damage. Sheffield Live! TV celebrates two years on air

The local TV channel for Sheffield marked its second anniversary with an invitation to get involved. Sheffield Live! TV launched in September 2014, providing a diverse programme schedule, from politics to poetry, and working alongside Sheffield Live! community radio and the SheffieldLive.org website. The channel operates on a not-for-profit basis and is open to volunteers, community reporters, and independent producers. Presenter and reporter Simon Thake spoke to Steve Buckley, Chair of Sheffield Live!

Festival of words prepares for 25th year in Sheffield

Sheffield’s ‘Off the Shelf’ literature festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this autumn. Starting in October, this year’s festival programme is wide ranging, with over 200 events for all ages and described by organisers as “bursting with innovation, creativity, authenticity and life”. Sheffield Live! reporter Shamman Freeman-Powell met with Off the Shelf organisers and authors and heard of taste of what’s in store.
